Ostrava – Ostrava wants to modify the southeastern part of Prokeš Square near the roundabout by Sokolská Street. Greenery, flowers, and new furniture will be added near the café. The old public lighting will also be replaced. This was announced to journalists today by city hall spokesperson Andrea Vojkovská.
Work is expected to start at the turn of September and October and will follow the current reconstruction of the sewer system. "The architectural solution of the space in the corner in front of the café is based on the current composition in front of the New Town Hall, so the paving will be replaced with the same type of granite paving stones that are used on Prokeš Square," said Deputy Mayor Kateřina Šebestová (ANO).
However, the current space will be reduced due to the planting of greenery, which is expected to ensure a more pleasant climate in the summer. Pits will be dug so that the trees have enough space to grow even after 30 years.
"The modifications, which will be completed next February, also include new public lighting, a bike rack, modern, designer trash bins, and benches with LED under-lighting. I also want to reassure the public that two solitary mature weeping beeches in the existing grassy area will be preserved; we will only remove overgrown bushes," added Šebestová. The area around the memorial, which commemorates those sentenced to forced labor during the totalitarian regime, will also be modified.
Four companies entered the competition for the redevelopment of the space. The costs of the modernization, proposed by architect Ivan Tachezy, will be 7.2 million crowns.
