Opava - A new street in Opava will bear the name of the Opava architect and builder Karel Kern. This name was suggested to the councilors by a representative of the development company that is building apartments in the area of the former tennis courts between Gogolova, Otická, Karolíny Světlé, and Nerudova streets. This was stated by the city spokesperson Lada Dobrovolná.

"Kern, whose first name is sometimes written with a K and a C, as Karel and Carl, was an Opava architect and builder living at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He is among other things the author of the architectural design of the Czech Savings Bank building, which has adorned Republic Square since 1902, and the U Antona hospitality establishment, which is adjacent to the area where the new houses are being built," the spokesperson explained.

The naming of the city's streets is decided by the councilors. They can choose from proposals made by citizens, suggest names themselves, or select a name from a previously approved list. "Currently, the list contains the names Dohnálkova, Vyčítalova, Šubčíkova, Heliodora Píky, Josefa Veselého, and Ilji Hurníka," Dobrovolná said.
