Ostrava – The Ostrava City Studio for Spatial Planning and Architecture (MAPPA) is preparing a concept for transforming the urban thoroughfare of October 28 - Opavská and wants to involve the public in the preparations. Interested parties can fill out a so-called feeling map and record their perception of the current state of the thoroughfare online until March 20. Zuzana Kotyzová shared this information for the studio with ČTK.

The streets of October 28 and Opavská together form one of the main urban arteries, starting at the tank near the Sýkorák Bridge in Silesian Ostrava and ending at the Globus hypermarket in Poruba. The thoroughfare is approximately 12 kilometers long, and around 100,000 people live in its vicinity, which is about one-third of the city's population. Thousands more use it daily.

"However, the quality of public space here does not correspond to the number of people living in it and flowing through it every day. There are a number of problems. Quality architecture is obscured by a plethora of tasteless advertisements, public space is marred by neglected greenery and broken furniture. In many places, the thoroughfare does not offer a fairly distributed space that is safe for everyone who moves through it. The city of Ostrava wants to start changing this," stated urban planner Zuzana Paclová from MAPPA studio.

The studio is therefore working on a concept that aims to establish a direction for the future gradual changes of the street, which is to become a fully valued urban thoroughfare. "The concept will describe how the thoroughfare should change to become a showcase for the city. A space that will serve citizens well. It will consider significant changes, such as the reconstruction of intersections or the creation of new squares, as well as the details of public space. It will specify suitable types of paving, benches, or ways of planting greenery. The concept will serve the city administration as a comprehensive basis for decision-making about key changes or investments," Kotyzová clarified.

Deputy Mayor Zuzana Bajgarová considers it a fundamental problem that people generally perceive both streets mainly as transit routes, not as urban streets. "A large number of people live around it, and thousands regularly use it; important urban institutions are located here. All of this shows how significant it is, and that only a conceptual approach can bring about its real development,” believes Bajgarová.

The public can express their views through the feeling map on the website www.pocitovemapy.cz/mapujememestskoutridu. Using colored dots, people can mark and comment on problematic and valuable places on the street and its surroundings, for example, where they feel safe, where they miss a bench or tree, or where there is often litter. The information collected will be further utilized as a basis for the upcoming concept.
