Brno - People in Brno today started collecting signatures for a petition against the planned construction of a skyscraper in the courtyard of Lidická, Kotlářská, Bayerova, and Burešova streets. The representative of the petition committee, Gabriela Stögerová, who lives right next to the plot where the skyscraper is to be built, told the journalists. The Green Party also joined the petition. Deputy Mayor of Brno-Center, Jasna Flamiková, stated that a private investor is to construct a building with a total height of 95 meters. There are supposed to be 177 apartments in 23 floors. According to residents and the Greens, it will impact the character of the area and reduce green space.

In Brno, the tallest building is the AZ Tower, which measures 111 meters. Architect Petr Hýl stated that high-rise buildings should be located in significant places, on corners, or at public transport intersections. "They serve as landmarks. They should be sensitively integrated into the area. This building does not meet that requirement; it is supposed to be in the middle of a row. In this context, I do not perceive it as successful and it deserves a more significant location," Hýl stated.

According to Stögerová, the plan is not liked by people from the affected buildings. "We value the opportunity to live in a house from the late 19th century, which has unique cultural and historical value. We appreciate the housing that has developed in harmony with the gardens in the courtyard," Stögerová said. She considers the intervention into green space unacceptable. According to critics, 180 parking spaces would require the cutting down of a garden with century-old plane trees.

The Mayor's Deputy, Martin Ander (Green Party), also believes that the construction could contradict the zoning plan. "The area is a stabilized territory, so it is expected to preserve the character of this area," Ander added. The decision would have to be made by the zoning planning department of the city hall. If Ander’s words were confirmed, the only way forward would be a change to the zoning plan, which would have to be approved by the council. Therefore, citizens together with the Greens initiated the collection of signatures for a petition so that they could hand it over to the new city leadership that will emerge from the October elections in a few months.
