Brno - Today, people submitted a petition against the planned construction of a skyscraper in the courtyard of Lidická, Kotlářská, Bayerova, and Burešova streets to the mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS) during the Brno city council meeting. The petition has over 4,500 signatures, said Gabriela Stögerová, a representative of the petition committee. She lives right next to the plot where the skyscraper is supposed to be built.

In the past, the Green Party has joined the petition. Former deputy mayor of Brno-střed Jasna Flamiková (SZ) has previously stated that a private investor wants to build a structure with a tower of a total height of about 95 meters. There are supposed to be 177 apartments in 23 floors.

According to Stögerová, people from the affected buildings do not like the plan. "We are grateful for the opportunity to live in a house from the end of the 19th century. It has cultural and historical value. The housing was created in harmony with the gardens in the courtyard," Stögerová stated. She believes that the intervention into the greenery is unacceptable. Due to the 180 parking spaces, a garden with century-old plane trees would have to be cut down.

The petition could be signed electronically and physically since last autumn. "In electronic form, we have gathered about 2,600 signatures, and in physical form on paper sheets, we have about 2,000 signatures," said Stögerová. According to her, the problem is that the developer does not communicate with the residents. "He has not contacted anyone living there. We, as well as the professional public from the field of architecture, feel that it would harm not only the courtyard but the whole of Brno," added Stögerová.

The tallest building in Brno and the Czech Republic is the AZ Tower with a height of 111 meters.
