Kutná Hora - The historic center of Kutná Hora will undergo extensive reconstruction next year. The city has received European funding for the repair of the pavement. Upon its completion, significant changes to traffic are also expected, Mayor Ivo Šalátek told reporters today. The first two phases of the pavement reconstruction in the historic center will cost approximately 90 million crowns. Of this, 92.5% will be covered by the grant, and the rest will be paid by the city from its own resources. By the end of the year, the city council hopes to select a contractor through a tender so that construction can begin in the spring. It is expected to be completed by April 2010. "We are facing a complex situation. This will mean significant restrictions for both locals and tourists," added the mayor. In the first two phases, for which the city has funds, roads around St. James Church, in Komenského, Ruthardova, Libušina, Vladislavova, Šultysova streets, and Václavské náměstí will be repaired, among others. In addition to surfaces, utility networks also need to be reconstructed, negotiations with their managers will still take place. The reconstruction will also include the construction of new sidewalks, lighting, an information system, and street furniture. After the reconstruction is completed, according to the mayor, the conditions for traffic in the historic center will change. Cars will still be able to enter, but it is expected that they will have to pay for it. "Traffic in the city can only be regulated with money. The capacity is historically given here; the width of the roads and the parking lots cannot be increased," the mayor added. In the future, entry to the center should only be from Husova, Česká, and Poděbradova streets. Other streets will serve as exits. However, the final form of traffic modifications is not yet complete.
