The Architecture Gallery Brno, in collaboration with the Architecture Cabinet and the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava, presents a selection of works by Scottish educator and artist Iain Patterson under the title

Iain Patterson – Out West

The exhibition is conceived as a typical example of the intersection of architecture and fine arts. In addition to photographs taken by the author on the Scottish island of Tiree, the exhibition also features other works inspired by the local landscape, such as paintings, drawings, and sculptures.

Artist and educator Iain Patterson (1946) taught for thirty years at the School of Drawing and Painting at the College of Art in Edinburgh. He closely collaborated with the New 57 Gallery and Collective Gallery in Edinburgh, which he founded and managed for many years. His works can be found in the Scottish Arts Council, as well as in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

"Iain Patterson has been working for many years with a motif that connects various forms and materials, with a motif of biological growth and transformation. He thus re-enters the clear world of grasses, fungi, seaweeds, coniferous and deciduous trees, and stems of unknown herbs and weeds that he finds on stony ruins. This biomorphism in various forms, including paintings and drawings or porcelain plaques, is, if we compare these perfect artistic creations to music, more of a compilation of études – a kind of tests and exercises, in a certain way unfinished. Occasionally, Patterson happens to build a bridge to the other shore, thus creating something in his specific own existence. He built his first such bridge while working on the collection "All The Monroes" (all the highest peaks of Scotland conquered by Lord Monroe, which Iain modeled on porcelain plates sized 10x10cm) and similar models "Peat Roads" (many-kilometer cuts in a straight line over surface mines of brown coal in northern Scotland). The paintings of imagined worlds of biomorphism, images expressing the movement of biological matter have been a motivation and the most frequent motif in his "active meditation" for many years. This meditative penetration into the mysteries of life alternates with the reconstruction of old houses in a way that allows for comfortable living while preserving traces of their past."
