Competition: The Ji.hlava Festival announces a competition for the architectural design and realization of festival spaces During a decade of collaboration with MFDF Ji.hlava, the architects Josef Čančík (ECHTarchitektura) and Vít Šimek (H3Tarchitekti) imbued the festival venues and public space in Jihlava with a distinctive and unforgettable character, gaining the respect of festival visitors and the architectural community. They expanded their architectural concept to include targeted interaction with the city and its residents, giving festival architecture—a unique form not only in the Czech context. From a factory chimney with an observation deck, an eternally burning fire pit, a shelf for storing memories of the past, to interiors created using classic colored fruit crates, festival visitors will long remember these elements. We are very pleased that this fragile type of architecture has been included in the Czech architectural yearbook, and we sincerely thank Josef, Vít, and their collaborators for a playful and inspiring decade! We are now seeking architectural partners (and buddies) for the next ten years. Sign up and show us what an original festival architectural concept should look like according to you. We look forward to it!
Task The aim of the competition is to find a creative and sustainable form of individual elements in the interior and exterior so that they visually correspond with each other, meet all functional requirements, and allow for variation depending on the needs arising from the context of individual spaces. Festival architecture includes the following points:
Cultural House of Trade Unions (DKO) The most frequented festival building, which hosts two festival cinemas, a VR Zone, a café/bar, and an intermediate floor serving as a relaxation zone during the day and a party stage at night. Along with the interior, we place emphasis on the design of the entrance to the building and the space in front of the DKO, where we want to maintain a small "square" with food stalls.
Outdoor signage for festival cinemas Festival screenings and other events take place in more than 10 buildings scattered throughout the city. The signage of individual locations aims not only to facilitate navigation for visitors but also to make the festival visible and enliven the city.
Interior navigation In several buildings, the festival utilizes multiple rooms. For easy navigation of visitors, it is important to address interior navigation in a straightforward manner as well.
Accreditation desks and other furniture Since festival activities take place in spaces that serve other purposes year-round, it is necessary to build a background that meets the needs of festival operations. These may include the equipment of accreditation desks, video libraries, temporary cafés, etc. Currently, the festival has constructions of accreditation desks and shelving that can continue to be used.
VR Zone An exhibition space that contains a VR cinema and individual spatial VR installations. Currently, the festival has basic constructions for dividing the space, which it would be desirable to continue to work with.
Installations in Masaryk Square in Jihlava We perceive festival architecture not only as a functional element but also for its potential to enliven the public space of the city. The main square in Jihlava can thus serve as a space for temporary installations.
