Prague – A total of 120 applicants have registered for the international competition for the design of the planned Philharmonic building at the Vltavská metro station in Prague. From these, the committee will select fifteen that will advance to the next round. However, there will be a total of 20 architectural teams in this round, as five have been approached in advance to take part in the competition. The winner is expected to be announced in June of next year. This was stated by the head of the project team, Martin Krupauer, at today's meeting of the city council's culture and tourism committee.
The building will be located by the banks of the Vltava River and will be part of the planned construction in the Bubny-Zátory area, where a new district will be created. At the end of October this year, a committee will convene to evaluate all submitted designs. From these, they will select fifteen to advance to the second round by March 2022. The winner of the competition from the total of 20 applicants will then be discussed and approved by the representatives of the capital city in June 2022.
"Currently, a draft contract with the winner is already being prepared, so that it will be ready at the moment they are selected," Krupauer stated. Officials are also working on a change to the zoning plan that will allow the construction. It should be completed by the beginning of next year, before the selection of the winning design for the building.
Overall, the building is estimated to cost 6.1 billion crowns, of which 4.9 billion will be construction costs and the rest for the project. According to the city's plans, financing should come from the city council, the state, and private investors. The new Philharmonic will host the Czech Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of the Capital City of Prague FOK, and the music department of the City Library.
