Discussion

Publisher

Once, the distinction between architecture and (mere) construction brought rich debates about what architecture is and how to define it. A. Loos, K. Teige, H. Meyer, and a host of others addressed the topic. Today, the situation appears to be such that everything is automatically considered architecture. In any case, it seems that this distinction is no longer alive. However, it is likely that the current discussion on this issue would be extraordinarily interesting and beneficial. Such differentiation compels distinctions, definitions, and reflections on the field; it raises questions about what exactly makes architecture architecture. The discussion on this topic will be led by architecture theorist Marián Zervan and philosopher Miroslav Petříček. Draw intellectual inspiration and clarify your thoughts.

Miroslav Petříček (1951) is a Czech philosopher. He serves as a university professor at the Faculty of Philosophy at Charles University and at the Prague FAMU. He focuses, among other things, on the philosophy of art and on the overlaps between philosophy, film, literature, and visual arts. He also translates French and German authors. Among his most notable books is Thinking in Images.

Marián Zervan (1952) is a theorist of architecture and art, head of the Department of Art History and Theory at FF TRUNI Trnava, and an assistant professor at VŠVU Bratislava. In 2016, he was a co-author of the concept for the Czech and Slovak Republic pavilion at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale. He is also engaged in the theoretical works of American architect Peter Eisenman.

Thematic architectural discussions. Once a month, two participants and one current topic. A proven form of academic debate, presentation of viewpoints, discussion, audience questions. The aim of the series is to open important and pressing topics, to allow for the presentation of various, often conflicting, positions, to confront diverse views with the perspective of experts, responsible authorities, and politicians, while also enabling interested laypeople and professionals to learn immediately about the positions of the participating parties and ask them questions. Each discussion is connected by a unifying theme.
