Zlín – The construction of the new building of the Faculty of Technology of Tomas Bata University in Zlín (UTB) will be completed by the end of this year. It is expected to be used starting in March 2027. The new structure will cost 653 million crowns. In January, the last part of the ceiling above the highest floor was poured, completing the load-bearing monolithic skeleton of the building, said UTB spokeswoman Petra Svěráková today.
Currently, work is ongoing on the façade of the building, which, in line with the tradition of Zlín architecture, features a revealed reinforced concrete skeleton and exposed masonry in combination with glass strips. "Inside the building, all other works on the main construction production and the installation of utility systems of all professions are underway. The installation of windows and waterproofing of the roof is progressing rapidly so that the building can be closed off from the weather as quickly as possible, ensuring conditions for continued interior work and smooth progress in the construction schedule," stated Pavel Blažek, head of the UTB investment and property department. Continuous 360-degree photography and 3D scanning of the construction site are also being conducted, and a digital 3D model of the building is being created.
The facility, featuring six above-ground floors and one partially underground technical floor, is being built in the city center on the site of the original faculty building, which dated back to the 1930s and was part of the industrial complex owned by Baťa. Due to poor structural integrity, it was demolished in 2023. The new building will house teaching laboratories, seminar rooms, and offices. The Institute of Production Engineering, the Institute of Polymer Engineering, the Institute of Physics and Material Engineering, the dean's office, and the faculty administration will all be situated there.
The construction will be completed by the end of this year. "Following this, supplies of laboratory equipment, office furniture, audiovisual technology, and other equipment will follow. The complete finishing and handover of the certified and fully equipped building to the Faculty of Technology for use is scheduled for March 2027," said UTB Treasurer Petra Jungová.
The new building will cost 653 million crowns. UTB received 201 million crowns from the Ministry of Education, 60 million comes from European grants, and 192 million crowns from the university's own funds. The Zlin Region provided 200 million crowns.
