Jablonec nad Nisou - The lookout tower on Tanvaldský Špičák in the Jizera Mountains is set for reconstruction next year. The work will be carried out during operation. The project costs are estimated by designers to be five million crowns, with approximately half to be covered by the European Union. Pavel Bažant, the director of the company SKI Bižu, which operates the local recreational area, told this to reporters today.

The eighteen-meter lookout tower on Tanvaldský Špičák celebrated its 110th birthday this summer. It was built between 1908 and 1909 according to the design of the Jablonec architect Robert Hemmrich, who also designed lookout towers on Černá Studnice, Bramberk, and Proseč. The standalone tower attracted such large crowds that a restaurant was added to it a year later. The current appearance dates back to the late 1920s, when it underwent its last modifications.

The lookout tower is in urgent need of repair. "It starts with the stairs; they are wooden and quite worn out. Thirty years ago, it was already discussed that they needed reconstruction, and they are still there," said Bažant. According to him, the reconstruction will consist of replacing the aged wooden staircase with a steel structure. "All the windows will also be replaced, the masonry will be re-pointed, and a new walkway will be built," he listed.

According to Bažant, it will again be necessary to rearrange the operators' antennas on the observation deck so they do not obstruct tourists' views. "It is also necessary to replace the roof covering because it is leaking," he added. The work is expected to start next year, with completion not until the following year. For the staircase replacement, builders are expected to use April or November, when the lookout tower is closed to tourists.
