Prague - Prague will purchase the National House in Vinohrady from the Office for the Representation of the State in Property Matters (ÚZSVM) for 399 million crowns. It will match the result of the March auction. This was approved today by the city councilors. The building at Náměstí Míru, according to the city's leadership plan, will continue to serve its existing purposes, primarily hosting balls and other social events.
The property office attempted to sell the building repeatedly, succeeding in the middle of this March on the eighth attempt at the starting price. It gave the city a chance to match the highest bid. According to councilor Adam Zábranský (Pirates), the city's company Obecní dům could operate the building in the future; however, until 2032, the monument is leased to the Národní dům-Cultural House of Railway Workers.
In the auction, ÚZSVM was successful with the company PSN, whose representative stated at the council meeting today that the company's owner, Václav Skala, is still interested in taking over the monument, operating it, and ensuring the necessary investments. Nevertheless, the councilors approved that the city will purchase the property. "I consider this, and there seems to be a consensus on this, as a strategic cultural asset that the city should have," said Zábranský.
The National House in Vinohrady was built in 1893 and 1894 according to the design of architect Antonín Turka. The neo-Renaissance building has four above-ground and two underground floors. It contains three large representative halls and four social salons.
