Ostrava – Ostrava has announced an architectural competition for the design of the reconstruction of the historic granary in Svinov, which is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The granary has long been in disrepair, and the city wants to transform it into a municipal library and community center. This was stated to journalists today by the municipal spokesperson Gabriela Pokorná.

"The city is looking for an author who can find the most suitable solution for this historic building, including a design for a library with a multifunctional hall, while meeting the requirements of contemporary operation and use. The goal of our intention is an effective reconstruction of the existing structures and the addition of a new building," said city councilor Markéta Langrová.

The city has announced a one-phase project competition. It will invite three ateliers with experience in the reconstruction of old buildings and their transformation or with library designs to submit proposals. An additional three suppliers will be invited based on submitted applications.

The Svinov stone granary is a registered cultural monument and consists of two adjacent buildings. The granary stands on the site of the old farmyard of the Wilczek family, where the Svinov fortress was originally located. Last summer, it was necessary to remove the roof from the granary, which was in a state of emergency.

"In the past, the building has changed owners frequently, and interventions have been made to both the exterior and interior of the buildings. Currently, the property is owned by the city, which purchased it for approximately 2.2 million crowns. The buildings have been statically assessed, and the information obtained has been used for the further process of rescuing the buildings," the spokesperson reminded. The city estimates the cost of the granary's reconstruction at 98 million crowns, excluding furnishings.

"Interested participants in the competition have the opportunity to view the location, and they can submit their applications for participation by March 26. The submitted applications, including portfolios of the applicants' previous experiences, will be reviewed by the jury. The jury will then recommend to the city councilors to invite selected participants to submit designs by the anticipated deadline of August 24 of this year. The winning proposal is expected to be chosen during September, and the competition designs will be presented in December of this year," said councilor and jury member Lukáš Semerák (Ostravak).

The author of the winning architectural design will then be expected to complete the design of the building, including the interior. The competition jury consists of representatives from the city, the district, and architects, and is chaired by architect Petr Všetečka.
