Brno - Brno has begun to construct the northern part of the street, which is currently called Bulvár and is expected to connect the city center with the new train station in the future. This northern part is set to be completed next summer, while the southern part will be built later. The new street will cost 129 million crowns, with the speed of surrounding development depending, according to councilor Petr Kratochvíl (ODS), on the construction of flood protection measures and the speed of private investors, he told reporters today. He mentioned that this is also the very first time he believes a new station will be created.
The reason is both the construction of Bulvár and the promise from the current Minister of Transport Ivan Bednárik (for SPD) that the ministry does not intend to postpone the reconstruction of the Brno railway node and has allocated the necessary funds for it. The start of construction is planned for 2028.
The northern part of Bulvár will connect Uhelná and Opuštěná streets, it will be 330 meters long and 50 meters wide. On both sides, there will be wide sidewalks, separated bike lanes, rows of trees, two lanes for cars in each direction, and a tram lane in the middle. However, the construction company must first build the sewer system and prepare all underground utilities.
"For the tram lane, there will only be a reserve for now, but we have agreed whether we could change the construction so that the tram base for laying the tracks is already prepared," Kratochvíl said. The new street should ideally be passable for cars from the moment it is completed. From the north, a connection to Uhelná is planned almost at the intersection with Úzká. The project currently envisions blocking the southern section since it was waiting for the removal of the gas station. "We are working on adjusting the project to connect Opuštěná," Kratochvíl stated.
The construction of flood protection measures on the Svratka River from the railway bridge near Uhelná Street will be tendered by the city. They are crucial for getting building permits for the constructions between the current and future main train stations, as well as for the station itself. Until now, a large area within sight of the center has been left unused.
The city is at various stages of preparation for the construction of additional streets between the stations and is also preparing the construction of a network of roads south of the new station. "Together with the Road and Motorway Directorate, we have defined the route for the southern part of the large city ring and its connection to the station. We urgently need these roads to service the station from the south and not draw all traffic into the city. It is not possible to service the station only through Opuštěná," Kratochvíl said, mentioning that these preparations are very complicated. This is also due to the fact that some roads will lead over bridges across the extensive railway yard of the new station and it is necessary to prepare the foundations for future bridges before laying the tracks. "Land acquisitions will also be challenging; we do not know what problems we might encounter. We also need to do a major general drainage plan," Kratochvíl mentioned.
