The company Autodesk presents Mudbox 2010 – software for digital modeling and drawing
The new version offers enhanced model quality, new presentation capabilities, and easier integration with digital workflows for creating entertainment titles.
The company Autodesk, a global leader in design software, introduced at SIGGRAPH 2009 the software Autodesk Mudbox 2010, the latest version of its digital modeling and painting application. The 2010 version makes it easier for artists to use Mudbox software alongside Adobe Photoshop software, Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, and Autodesk Softimage. The Mudbox 2010 software now also includes new creative tools and workflows, along with an SDK suite that allows production teams to customize and integrate Mudbox software into production processes.
Mudbox 2010 will be delivered as part of the Autodesk Entertainment Creation Suites, making it more accessible for incorporating this technology into workflows for producing films, games, and television shows.
“Autodesk Mudbox provides artists the freedom to create 3D digital artwork as easily as working with clay and paint,” said Stig Gruman, vice president of Autodesk's Digital Entertainment Group. “This software allows artists to give their 3D characters, objects, and environments a level of detail that is difficult to achieve in traditional 3D modeling applications.”
Christoph Schädl, character artist at RABCAT Computer Graphics GmbH, was a beta tester for Mudbox 2010. “I love working with Mudbox because its intuitive user interface allows me to focus entirely on my creative vision,” said Schädl. “My favorite feature in version 2010 is the ability to paint across multiple texture maps, in different channels, without visible seams. This means you can paint really huge textures – 50K and more.”
Key New Features
Collaboration with Adobe Photoshop: New workflows make it easier to use Mudbox in conjunction with Adobe Photoshop. Mudbox 2010 can import PSD files as drawing layers and can also export drawing layers as PSD files for retouching purposes.
Simplified collaboration with Maya, 3ds Max, and Softimage: Mudbox adds support for Autodesk FBX file transfer technology, allowing artists to import and export scene data containing more information than the usual OBJ file format. Painted texture maps, cameras, and image planes can be preserved, leading to high-fidelity transfers and saving time for the artist.
SDK Suite: Mudbox 2010 introduces a C++ SDK that production teams can use to customize and integrate Mudbox software into production processes.
New creative tools and workflows: Version 2010 also includes new sprays, support for changing the order of layers with drawings, baking environmental maps, new display filters, and the ability to render images directly from the display – making Mudbox a great presentation tool.
Autodesk Digital Entertainment Creation Suites The Autodesk Entertainment Creation Suites offer customers a choice of Autodesk Maya 2010 or Autodesk 3ds Max 2010 software – along with Autodesk Mudbox 2010 and Autodesk MotionBuilder 2010 software. These product suites, compared to purchasing individual standalone products, provide artists and production companies access to a range of powerful creative tools while achieving significant cost savings. With Autodesk FBX data exchange technology 2010, these product suites deliver a coherent and efficient production workflow. Products within these suites, when used together, help artists maximize creative capabilities and optimize productivity.
