“There is no excuse for lack of comfort in design.” Karim Rashid

The exclusive limited collection Ottawa, including a dining table, chairs, storage cabinets, as well as coffee mugs, bowls, vases, rugs, and lamps from the world-renowned designer Karim Rashid, is presented by the Danish furniture and accessory showroom BoConcept. The limited collection Ottawa pays homage to the Canadian city where Karim Rashid began his design studies and thus launched his career. The collection is inspired by Nordic simplicity with an emphasis on the functionality of the products, but it also features Rashid's extravagant signature in the form of vibrant colors, refined details, and playful patterns or prints. The furniture and accessories from the Ottawa collection can be purchased at BoConcept and Decoland showrooms in Prague, Brno, and Ostrava.
The Ottawa collection is characterized by the use of natural materials, such as white wood and light veneer or leather. It seems as though nature has penetrated into its very shapes: the seat cushions of Ottawa chairs resemble leaves, and the legs of the chairs and dining table branch out in an unconventional way, while the tabletop is gently rounded. The Ottawa collection is a classic example of “sensual minimalism,” which is advocated by Karim Rashid. Sensual because the objects are meant to evoke emotions, being pleasant in shape both to the eye and to the touch, and minimalism because the form of the products is stripped down to a minimum, yet without compromising functionality. “Comfort should be the main guiding principle of design,” says the world-renowned designer, who has over three thousand designs and three hundred design awards to his name, including the prestigious Red Dot Design Award.

The Ottawa collection also includes a sideboard and a cabinet, which can also serve as a multifunctional partition, with atypically rounded handles, whose green color contrasts wonderfully with the otherwise austere lines of the furniture in white lacquer or oak veneer. The Ottawa collection also features stylish and versatile accessories, such as a set of fluorescent vases in irregular shapes, which can be assembled like a puzzle or used individually, a white rug with a fingerprint pattern of the designer, and porcelain multifunctional cups and espresso mugs with characteristic Rashid’s extravagant patterns, some of which are inspired by his tattoos. The chandelier and table lamp also evoke the retro style of the sixties with their rounded shapes and the use of a combination of orange and white. The Ottawa collection is closed with a black and white oval bowl consisting of two identical parts that can also function independently.

It is not common for Karim Rashid to design an entire collection as a guest designer; he usually focuses only on one product. However, for the Ottawa collection for BoConcept, he made a notable exception. “I have been following the BoConcept brand since the opening of its first store in Paris in 1993, and I have always wanted to work for it,” says Karim Rashid, who holds over three hundred design awards, such as the Chicago Athenaeum Good Design Award, the I.D. Magazine Annual Design Review Award, and the IDSA Industrial Design Excellence Award. The furniture and accessories from Rashid's Ottawa collection can be purchased at BoConcept and Decoland showrooms in Prague, Brno, and Ostrava. In addition to the aforementioned Ottawa collection, Decoland also offers other Rashid collections – the Hellraiser bowls and the Kaj clocks for the Alessi brand, and the Crystal kitchen from Scavolini with Rashid-designed Karikon and Flexus doors.
