Autodesk, in collaboration with FA ČVUT, announces the 3rd edition of the REVIT OPEN competition for students and recent university graduates
The task of the REVIT OPEN 2009 competition is to create a design for an energy self-sufficient building for an ecological sheep farm in the protected area of the Beskydy.
Autodesk, a world leader in design software, together with the Modeling Cabinet of the Faculty of Architecture of Czech Technical University (MOLAB), announces the third annual anonymous public competition REVIT OPEN. The competition is aimed at students and recent graduates of universities (up to 3 years after graduation) with a focus on construction and architecture in the Czech and Slovak Republics. The goal of the competition is to create a design for an energy self-sufficient building or several buildings for an ecological sheep farm in the protected landscape area of Beskydy at the location of Santov.
Just like in previous years, "REVIT OPEN 2009 – Independent House, Sheep Farm" is a public, ideational, single-round competition intended for individuals or multi-member teams. This is a unique competition in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, where the worlds of two fields of study - architecture and civil engineering meet. New this year, foreign students studying in the Czech Republic on scholarships can also participate. The proposed competition object is to represent an ecological, energy self-sufficient sheepfold for 150 sheep (ewes) and at least 2 rams with an additional breeding of a small group of goats numbering about 5 to 10 animals. The own land for the competition design is located on a hill by Santov.
The object should demonstrate minimal operating costs, minimal operational burden on the environment, and in character should lean towards low-energy construction. For the development of the design and its presentation, contestants must use software from Autodesk. The evaluation factors in the competition include architectural considerations, construction technical solutions, and utilization of the possibilities provided by the software solution. For comprehensive use of the software Revit Architecture or AutoCAD Architecture, contestants will receive an additional bonus score in total.
“Given the great success of the past two years, we decided to organize another round of the competition, which is unique in the Czech Republic and Slovakia because it does not isolate the world of architecture and civil engineering. It prepares students for a practice in which these two fields are closely linked,” says Patrik Minks, chairman of the jury of the REVIT OPEN competition and business manager for construction solutions at Autodesk. “For us, the competition is attractive because, like our company, it emphasizes ecology and the creation of natural landscapes. Autodesk solutions help architects and civil engineers design buildings in accordance with the concept of sustainable development. Thanks to the integrated BIM method, solutions also allow buildings to be designed more efficiently and in better collaboration among all stakeholders.”
“Students, according to our internal research, appreciate and welcome our competition as the only one that connects the Faculty of Civil Engineering with the Faculty of Architecture in our market. REVIT OPEN promotes teamwork, which is very important for the future professions of architects and civil engineers,” says Dana Matějovská, head of MOLAB at the Faculty of Architecture of Czech Technical University. “After the inaugural year, the number of participants from Brno, Ostrava, Bratislava, and Košice has increased. According to student reactions, this international competition is becoming prestigious. Regarding the competition assignment, specialists currently consider the topic of ecological construction in protected landscape areas and the issue of alternative resources to be very relevant. Therefore, this year contestants are tasked with designing a sheep farm in the protected landscape area of Beskydy. Breeding sheep and goats is an integral part of ecological land management and landscape maintenance.”
The registration deadline for the competition is September 30, 2009, and the final day for submitting designs is November 9, 2009. The ceremonial announcement and award ceremony will take place in March 2010. Authors of the best designs will receive prizes in the form of Autodesk software, laptops, and digital SLR cameras.
