After the previous lecture blocks, this spring we will look into neighboring Austria, with which we share a long history thanks to the Habsburg monarchy. From the father of Modern architecture Otto Wagner, we will proceed through Art Nouveau and Wiener Werkstätte to organic functionalism, post-war activism, and through deconstruction, we will examine the digital scene in the 21st century. Although Austria is smaller in area and population, it offers a diverse spectrum of architectural styles and an incomparably higher building culture, from which many examples can be drawn for our own creations.
As part of the lecture cycle, there will also be a seminar for the April trip to Vorarlberg (April 18-24, 2017), with the main goal of visiting authors and viewing their realizations around Lake Constance firsthand. From student presentations, sketches, and observations, we plan to publish a printed guide for all participants, similar to last year.
