The Dominicans from the St. Giles Monastery in Prague have been carefully preparing the project for the complete reconstruction of the building for a longer time and are still contemplating how to best utilize the facility for the benefit of the public. Architect Josef Pleskot, historian Dušan Foltýn, and provincial Benedikt Mohelník OP will present the planned intention to the public on Monday, May 16, 2011, at 4:30 PM in the baroque refectory of the monastery (entrance Jilská 7a). The project of the monastery's restoration is under the patronage of Prague Archbishop Dominik Duka OP, who will also attend the presentation.
The project for the reconstruction and revitalization of the Dominican monastery in Prague has been in development for several years. The first ideas began to be formulated in 2006. A series of expert surveys and analyses, as well as technical documentation, were created. This rich material served as a basis for the architectural study of the monastery building's reconstruction. The execution of the study, which was completed in the spring of 2011, is the work of architect Josef Pleskot and his studio.
However, the repair of the building alone is not enough; it must have a deeper meaning. This meaning is the operation of the community of Dominican brothers in the spirit of their order's mission. Although the focus of religious orders has remained unchanged for centuries, the specific forms are always determined by the contemporary context. The platform Dominican 8 - A Place of Education and Culture at the St. Giles Monastery in Prague is today that new tool with which the Dominican brothers want to co-create the spiritual and cultural environment of their time.
