KRUH: lecture series “Brno in Prague”

In 2007, KRUH once again focused on Czech, more precisely Moravian, architecture after a long time in its lecture activities. We have invited several architects from Brno to Prague. After an excellent prelude performed by Zdeněk Fránek during last year’s festival “4+4+4 days in motion” and after the introductory lecture by Svatopluk Sládeček from New Work, it is time for Petr Pelčák from the Brno atelier Architects Hrůša & Pelčák with his report titled “Atelier Brno in Prague”.

Architects Hrůša and Pelčák are the authors of nearly two hundred and fifty architectural and urban projects, competition designs, and realized buildings. They belong to the most significant representatives of regional architecture in our country.

Their works have been nominated twice (1997 and 2003) for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture (Mies van der Rohe Pavilion Award), awarded several domestic prizes (TOP INVEST for the construction of the Vaňkovka Gallery in Brno, Grand Prix of the Architects' Association 2004 main award in the category of Landscape Architecture and Gardening Design for the reconstruction of Denis Gardens and Studánka, Award from the club Za starou Prahu for new construction in a historical setting 2002 for the department store Josefská – Novobranská in Brno), exhibited many times at exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad, and are represented in the permanent exposition of contemporary art at the National Gallery in Prague. Among their realizations are the residential building Vídeňská in Brno, the reconstruction and modification of the birthplace of Josef Hoffmann, the town hall of the Komín district in Brno, the administrative building of Blata Company, Blansko, a municipal rental house with small apartments in Slavonice, the administrative and operational building of the Morava River Authority in Olomouc, etc.

Petr Pelčák, born in 1963 in Brno, graduated from the Faculty of Architecture VUT Brno in 1986. 1984 – 1986 extraordinary study of art history – Masaryk University Brno. 1986 – 1990 Stavoprojekt Brno, atelier of Viktor Rudiš, 1990 – 1991 atelier of Prof. Wilhelm Holzbauer in Vienna. Since 1992, co-office with Petr Hrůša Architects Hrůša & Pelčák, Atelier Brno. In 1994, lecturer at the summer school of architecture in Liberec, 1995 – 1996 and from 2004 lecturer at FA VUT Brno, where he habilitated in 2005. Since 1984, publications in the field of theory, history, and criticism of architecture; editor, co-author, and author of several publications on architecture, including the yearbook Czech Architecture 1999 – 2000. From 1992 to 1997, curator or co-curator of exhibitions at the Architecture Gallery in Brno. Together with Petr Hrůša, authors of nearly two hundred and fifty architectural and urban projects, competition designs, and realized buildings. Their works have been nominated twice (1997 and 2003) for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture (Mies van der Rohe Pavilion Award), awarded several domestic annual awards, exhibited many times at exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad, and are represented in the permanent exposition of contemporary art at the National Gallery in Prague.

Member of the Czech Chamber of Architects, the association Obecní dům Brno (chairman), SVÚ Mánes, DOCOMOMO, editorial board of the magazine Arch (Bratislava), correspondent for the magazine Werk, Bauen + Wohnen (Zurich).
