The American architect Charles Durrett is today associated worldwide with a term less common in our region, cohousing, which could be translated into Czech as cooperative neighbor community. Ch. Durrett became acquainted with this model of housing in Denmark and successfully introduced it, together with his wife Kathryn McCamant, in the USA in the 1980s.
Cohousing is a consciously built neighbor community that emphasizes deeply experienced interpersonal relationships while maintaining and supporting personal independence. Cohousing thus combines private and shared living spaces. Each family/couple/individual has access to a fully equipped housing unit (apartment/house) and simultaneously to communal spaces - Community House, which houses a large kitchen with dining area, laundry room, drying room, library, TV room, children's playroom, gym, or studios. The Community House serves as the center of social activities. The architecture and urbanism of cohousing support the congregation of neighbors and the sharing of activities, which is the essence of the community. The benefits are economic, ecological, and social.
Senior cohousing is one variant of cohousing with the difference that it is a community where only seniors or middle-aged people live. Senior cohousing has great potential for the future because it best meets the needs and desires of seniors. A global trend in senior care is aging at home, in the so-called natural social environment. Given the growth in the number of seniors in society and the necessity of seeking sustainable solutions for the future, the initiative of seniors/future seniors is very welcome and supported. Senior cohousing represents one of the options for preparing in advance for one's own old age spent among friends in a familiar environment. Thus, no large-capacity institution, no absurd regime, no loss of personal identity.
