Olomouc - An upcoming exhibition will showcase the possible form of planned flood protection measures in the landscape along the Morava River in the northern part of Olomouc, presented by students from the Faculty of Architecture at the Brno University of Technology, starting Wednesday in the mirror hall of the Olomouc city hall. The students, under the supervision of architect Jan Mléčka and landscape architect Iva Novotná, focused on creating the conceptual design for the third stage of flood protection measures and detailing its individual components. The exhibition, titled Touches of the Morava, will be on display until March 24. This information was communicated today by city hall spokesperson Radka Štědrá.
According to the project authors, the Morava River holds great significance for the city of Olomouc, making it necessary to create a harmonious environment that takes into account the protection of the city while also considering the surrounding nature. For instance, in the Lazce district, through which the Morava River flows, students designed a cascade of natural river beaches. In the neighboring district of Černovír, they proposed building an amphitheater for relaxation. "The concepts of the Brno architecture students' designs are primarily based on making the river accessible to the residents of Olomouc, creating resting places, and connecting the local areas," said Štědrá.
Part of the exhibition of student works is called Futurama and demonstrates collaboration with Palacký University, particularly in researching progressive agricultural technologies, which include, among other things, the combination of agricultural land use with a photovoltaic power plant, growing plants in water utilizing existing water surfaces, and intensive vertical farming methods employing hydroponic or aeroponic principles.
The project by Brno architecture students will serve as a basis for public debate on the assignment of an architectural-landscape competition for the third stage of flood protection measures, to be announced by the city. "Our goal is to restore the urban-generating functions of the Morava River so that a riparian zone can be created around it, which will serve as a green backbone of the city and provide the public with space for physical activities and recreation in a natural environment. Part of these flood protection measures will also include the revitalization of the river in a nature-friendly way," stated Mayor's Deputy Tomáš Pejpek (ProOlomouc and Pirates).
The upcoming third stage of flood protection measures will build upon last year's completed modifications of the Morava River in the center of Olomouc. From the bridge on Komenského Street, it continues north upstream along the Morava River and Trusovický Stream up to Černovír. The flood protection modifications in the northern part of Olomouc will be completed with a transverse protective embankment between Černovír and Řepčín.
