Pernštejn (Brno Region) - Nearly 50 vanished castles and fortresses that once towered in the valleys of the Svitava and Svratka rivers are presented at the newly opened exhibition "Mounds at Pernštejn Castle." Its creators have made drawings of the lost and in many cases completely forgotten medieval settlements, said Eva Dvořáková from the Brno Heritage Institute to ČTK. Heritage experts photographed from an airplane the areas where the castles stood. Visitors can not only view the actual drawing of the structure and read information about it, but they will also see how much the landscape has changed since the object's demise. The area north of Brno was literally dotted with castles in the past. In the Svitava valley, only one remains - the New Castle near Adamov, which has been under reconstruction by a group of enthusiasts for many years. In the vicinity of the New Castle stood the Old Castle or Devil's Fort, belonging to a plundering knight nicknamed Dry Devil. The lords from Ronov had their seat in Adamov, and the most likely insignificant castle was Blansek located near the Punkva Caves. In the Svratka basin, the castles Pernštejn and Veveří are among the most well-known structures of their kind in Moravia. There were more castles in this area as well. Gradually, however, they lost their significance and fell into decline. The exhibition will run until October 31. The Heritage Institute has compiled a collection documenting all the presented lost castles.
