Kružberk (Opavsko) - The company Povodí Odry has started the repair of the Kružberk reservoir in the Opava region for more than 80 million crowns. The reconstruction will take place on the crown and upper part of the dam. The repair is expected to be completed next December, and the operation of the reservoir will not be restricted in any way. This was communicated to ČTK by Kateřina Šreková on behalf of the Povodí Odry company.
The reservoir was built in the 1950s, and in November it will mark 60 years since it began operation. According to the company, the reconstruction was urgently needed, as some parts of the dam are at the end of their lifespan.
“The reconstruction of the dam crown includes the demolition of the roadway, sidewalk consoles, and bridges over the overflow, as well as their reconstruction, modification of the drainage system of the crown, and addition of waterproofing. The parameters and appearance of the crown will be preserved, but the surface of the roadway will be covered with asphalt instead of cobblestones,” described Jiří Konečný from the investment department of the state enterprise Povodí Odry regarding the reconstruction. The repair will also address other parts of the dam.
During the repair, the second-class road between Svatoňovice and the local part of Jakartovice, Kerhartice, will be closed. However, the reconstruction will not restrict the operation of the reservoir. “Maintaining the functionality and safety of the hydraulic structure, as well as ensuring the protection of water in the reservoir against possible contamination during construction works, are among the main conditions that the contractor must adhere to,” Konečný stated. The costs of the repair will be covered by the company from its own resources.
The Kružberk waterwork on the Moravice River was completed in 1955 and is the oldest dam in northern Moravia and Silesia. The dam is 34.5 meters high at its highest point. Its crown is 280 meters long and 9.5 meters wide. The flooded area exceeds 280 hectares, and the reservoir holds over 35 million cubic meters of water. The dam mainly provides drinking water for the Ostrava agglomeration, accounting for about half of the total needed amount. It also helps reduce flood waves on the Moravice and Opava rivers.
