Prague - The winner of the competition for the design of a monument to politician Milada Horáková, executed by the communists, is sculptor Josef Faltus. According to the initiators from the Stránský Foundation, the monument should be located on Sněmovní Street in Prague. A total of 23 authors participated in the competition, and their designs will be exhibited from today until Friday at the Topič Salon on Národní třída.
"Milada Horáková is a symbol of national pride and a reminder of high human and social values, such as morality, honor, and the courage to fight for one's rights. I am convinced that these attributes are essential for the Czech nation today," said Martin Jan Stránský from the Stránský Foundation.
According to earlier statements by Stránský, the monument should be life-sized. "Milada Horáková will stand on Sněmovní Street as a reminder of true Czechness to all politicians who significantly influence our fate," he stated. The creation of the monument is pursued not only by Stránský but also by the Club of Dr. Milada Horáková.
In addition to the winner, the jury awarded two other designs - from the team of Tomáš Růžička and Pavla Kačírková, and the team of Jan Kovářík and Jan Proksa. The jury includes sculptor Jan Hendrych, architects Jan Kerel and Štěpán Špoula, architectural historian Zdeněk Lukeš, and art historian Jaromír Zemina.
Prague 1 refused to declare an architectural competition for the design of the monument in April, as some councilors were reportedly concerned that the city district would have to fund it. The foundation is trying to raise money for the monument. Contributions can be made through the foundation's website, where further information is also available. So far, over 37,000 crowns have been raised.
Lawyer and National Socialist MP Horáková (1901 to 1950) was executed by the communists after a fabricated trial. In honor of Horáková, a monument with a bust was created in Prague in 2009 in a park on Náměstí Hrdinů in Prague 4, near the prison and court building.
