Zlín - The demolition of buildings 24 and 26 has begun at the former Baťa factory in the center of Zlín. According to the owner of the properties, Cream Real Estate, the buildings were in a state of disrepair, stated the company's director Martin Jarolím today to ČTK. A project called Fabrika will be built in their place, which will serve commercial activities and the university. However, some people in Zlín criticized the demolition and preferred the reconstruction of the factory buildings.
"Demolition is a necessary step because the expert assessment revealed that the buildings in question are in a state of emergency, have unstable structures, and risk collapsing. Hundreds of people move around the buildings daily, and we cannot risk any danger. The buildings are an integral part of the complex, and we feel an even greater responsibility regarding the preparation of a quality sustainable project that should fill this empty space," Jarolím stated.
Cream received permission from the building office in August, and work began last weekend; according to the company, it will not disrupt operations in the eastern part of the complex. "Demolition will take place without the use of wrecking hammers; the technology is solely cutting, which ensures that there will be no demolition shocks. In the event of increased dust levels, sprinkling is ensured, and noise is minimized by this technology," said Cream spokesperson Jaroslava Němcová. A one-hundred-meter section of Vavrečkova Street will be closed from building 34 to building 24 until January 6th.
Cream Real Estate owns about 50 percent of the properties in the Baťa complex. This year, it completed the reconstruction of the seven-story building 32, which has become the headquarters of Czech Post, offering commercial spaces and loft apartments.
The complex, which is gradually being renewed, houses the regional and financial offices as well as the regional police headquarters, and a new public transport line started operating in December.
