Pacov (Pelhřimovsko) - In Pacov in the Pelhřimov region, the town hall has embarked on the restoration of the castle church of St. Wenceslas, one of the landmarks in the city center. The significant monument, built by Kilián Ignác Dienzenhofer in the Baroque era, will undergo moisture removal this year costing 1.5 million, and will receive new plaster and coatings next year, said Mayor Lukáš Vlček today to ČTK. The reconstruction is half funded by the Urban Heritage Zone Regeneration program.
"The chapel suffers greatly from moisture, which leads to the degeneration of both the internal and external plaster and the overall deterioration of the building's condition," said the mayor. The external wall remediation is complete, and the internal work will take place in winter. Recently, the monument has been used sporadically for summer exhibitions; concerts in the church cannot be held due to poor acoustics. Adjustments and furnishing of the interior for social events will therefore be the next phase of the monument's revitalization. The city currently holds such events in the ceremonial hall of the town hall in the square.
The church of St. Wenceslas was built by the Discalced Carmelites after General Zikmund Myslík of Hyršov bequeathed them his property in Pacov in the early 18th century. They gradually constructed a monastery with a church on the site of the castle. However, the monastery was dissolved during the Josephine reforms, and the Carmelites were replaced by a religious fund, followed by secular owners. They used the church for various purposes – from storage to representative spaces.
During socialism, the castle with the church was occupied by the army, and in 1997, the state transferred it to the city. According to the mayor, the interior of the church was looted and destroyed by the army.
