Washington – Officials from Donald Trump's administration have officially presented detailed visualizations of the proposed victory arch, which the president has been promoting for several months. If the project is approved, it will significantly change the face of the capital, which is full of monuments, wrote Reuters. The proposed arch is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
The designs include an ivory-colored arch inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus, reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It is to be 250 feet (76 meters) tall. The proposal also includes golden decorative elements, including a 60-foot (18-meter) statue at the top resembling the Statue of Liberty with angelic wings. It will be flanked by two 24-foot (7.3 meters) tall eagle statues.
The arch will also feature two excerpts from the American pledge of allegiance to the flag and the United States. It will be completed by four golden lion statues.
The proposed arch is to be built on the site of the current empty roundabout between the Lincoln Memorial and the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, the most significant military cemetery in the USA, where soldiers fallen in American wars, veterans, and some notable figures are buried.
The project must be approved by the federal Commission of Fine Arts, which is now primarily composed of Trump's allies. Even with approval, however, it may face challenges in court as some residents of the Washington area are trying to block the construction with lawsuits. Trump has previously stated that he wants to build the "largest arch of all". The proposed structure would significantly surpass the height of the Lincoln Memorial and would be about half the height of the Washington Monument in the shape of an obelisk. At the same time, it would be the largest federal monument built in Washington since the construction of the Jefferson Memorial in 1943.
