Ostrava - The construction of the Community Centre began today in Ostrava-Mariánské Hory with the laying of the foundation stone. It will include a day care center and apartment buildings for the disabled. City spokesperson Andrea Vojkovská stated today that the center will be completed in 36 weeks.

The construction will cost over 131 million crowns, of which 80.6 million will be funded by grants from European funds. "The project is the largest supported investment from the Regional Operational Program Moravskoslezsko in the area of social services. So far, we have allocated 380 million crowns among dozens of projects; this one is unique in its scale and significance," said David Sventek, director of the Regional Council Office of Moravskoslezsko, which distributes European money.
The day care center, with a capacity of up to 54 places, will offer services such as physiotherapy. The apartment buildings will provide homes for 12 people, while an additional four will be able to use respite care services. Council spokesperson Michal Sobek noted that the project will also create 39 new jobs.
"This is a timeless project. This type of community center will be the only one in the region," said Jiří Srba (ČSSD), deputy mayor of Ostrava for investments. He reminded that it was already planned in the past that the area, which has been empty for a long time after the demolition of the former buildings, would serve social purposes.
Sixteen-year-old Ján Žaludko, one of the potential clients of the future Community Center, said that the project offers the disabled a chance for a fulfilling life that will not be governed by strict visiting hours.
