Křižanov (Žďársko) - In Křižanov in the Žďár region, the construction of a memorial to the local native Saint Zdislava was symbolically launched today. It is expected to be completed by the celebrations of the twentieth anniversary of her canonization in 2015. Today, during a mass attended by hundreds of believers, Bishop Vojtěch Cikrle of Brno laid the cornerstone of the building, which was blessed by Pope Francis in the Vatican this spring.
The memorial, made of gray-blue granite and measuring 12 meters in diameter, will feature a statue of Zdislava and a fountain and will be located in the square. "The bronze statue of the saint will be created by academic sculptor Otmar Oliva, who is already working on the model. He will now start visiting quarries with the artist responsible for the stone elements to select suitable stone," said Nila Vodičková, who is organizing the event, to ČTK. She was also involved in creating the Zdislava sculpture for the local church in the 1970s.
First, preparations will begin for the memorial site. Land preparation will be carried out, water supply for the fountain will be secured, as well as electricity and a sewage connection. The progress of these works will depend on how quickly the remaining funds can be raised. So far, just over three million crowns has been collected from donors out of the required five million crowns.
One of the two Czech saints after 1989 is commemorated in her birthplace by two sculptures, a scene from her wedding in the local church, and a statue on the nearby Holy Mountain. Saint Zdislava has had an altar in the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in nearby Žďár nad Sázavou since 2008, where her remains were laid to rest. Her mother Sybila, her sisters, and brothers-in-law are buried in the Žďár monastery. She herself is buried in the monastery basilica of St. Lawrence and St. Zdislava in Jablonné v Podještědí. For the tenth anniversary of Zdislava's canonization by Pope John Paul II, five paintings were placed in the convent church in Žďár in her honor.
Zdislava, who was canonized in 1995, spent her childhood and early youth at Křižanov Castle. It was the primary residence of her father Přibyslav, who was the burgrave of Brno and owned estates in the Highlands. Her mother was Sibyla of Sicily, a lady-in-waiting to the wife of Václav I - Kunhuta. At the age of fifteen, Zdislava married Havel of Lemberk in northern Bohemia, with whom she had four children. She was the founder of churches and monasteries and, until her death at around the age of 30, she helped the poor and the sick.
