Pardubice - Pardubice University has completed a large-scale construction of a modern faculty of chemical technology complex in its campus in the Polabiny district. The new facilities will serve the education of 1800 students and research activities in the fields of chemical, chemical technology, biochemistry, and biotechnology disciplines, said the university spokesperson Valerie Wágnerová. The university will also retain the original faculty building in Legií Square.
"After the renovation, it will mainly serve the purposes of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science," said the spokesperson.
The construction of the faculty of chemical technology complex was preceded by the construction of sports facilities, which began on October 1, 2005, and the gymnasiums were put into operation in November of the following year. The construction costs reached approximately 1.3 billion crowns. "This is the most significant investment project of Pardubice University in the entire history of higher education in Pardubice, which dates back to the early 1950s," Wágnerová mentioned.
The new faculty buildings should meet all the requirements for a modern university environment and quality laboratory facilities, with conditions comparable to leading European higher education institutions of a similar nature, according to Wágnerová. The complex consists of three buildings arranged around the academic square in the heart of the university campus, containing a total of 168 laboratories, 24 classrooms including computer rooms, four large lecture halls, and additional facilities for academic staff and student accommodation.
The new buildings will still need to be equipped with furniture and technical equipment for education and research. "We expect that the new lecture halls will start to be used by students from the summer semester," Wágnerová said.
At the seven faculties of Pardubice University, approximately 9200 university students are enrolled this academic year. For this year, the school has accredited a total of 69 study programs with 146 fields of study in bachelor's, follow-up master's, and doctoral studies. By 2010, the university is expected to have a total of 10,000 students.
