Olomouc - The Olomouc City Hall will introduce a new public transport (MHD) terminal into test operation on Sunday, which was built during the last phase of the renovation of the area in front of the main railway station. The ticketing point will start operating ahead of schedule; according to initial estimates, it was supposed to be in operation by March next year. The work on modifying the area in front of the station was expedited partly due to favorable weather conditions. This was stated to reporters today by the Deputy Mayor Martin Major (ODS).
Thanks to the new terminal, most MHD stops that have so far been located at several places in front of the station will be concentrated in one location. "The terminal will initially be in test operation because it is necessary to evaluate passenger flows. I anticipate that I will present the evaluation conclusions to the councilors by the end of January. Passengers will learn about the new stop placements from a large information board," said the Mayor's deputy Svatopluk Ščudlík (ČSSD).
The last phase of the modifications to the area in front of the station began this spring. In addition to building the new MHD terminal, it also includes connecting the tram lines that lead to the station via Kosmonautů Avenue and Masaryk Avenue. The original schedule anticipated that the reconstruction would be completed by mid-July next year. However, according to the latest information from the city, the construction company will manage to complete it two months earlier.
"The weather is favorable for the builders, and we have also asked the contractor to deploy all possible resources to the construction. Currently, all major construction work in front of the station is already finished. Next year, only minor work will remain, such as installing furniture and public greenery," said Major.
The city began the redevelopment of the area in front of the railway station in 2001. In the first two phases, underground garages, a pedestrian underpass, and a public space with a fountain in front of the Olomouc Region headquarters were created, among other things. The third phase included the construction of a new tram turntable, among other things. The first three phases cost about 350 million crowns. The last phase will cost nearly 260 million crowns. The costs will be covered by the city with the help of a hundred million crown grant from European funds.
