Sušice (Klatovsko) - The city of Sušice is set to spend 114 million crowns excluding VAT on the construction of a new indoor swimming pool. The company that offered the lowest price in the public tender was confirmed by the city councilors on Monday evening. If everything goes smoothly without appeals from other companies, the city plans to hand over the construction site to the firm by December, and the finished pool should be completed by the end of 2013, said mayor Petr Mottl (ODS) to ČTK.

Twelve bidders participated in the competition for the construction of the pool, offering prices ranging from 114 to 156 million crowns. Earlier, the representatives decided that the construction of Sušice would be financed from its own resources with a maximum price of 150 million crowns, and they would take out a loan of up to ninety million crowns to assist with the funding.
Mottl is convinced that even this relatively high investment makes sense for a town with 11,500 residents in the future. "Sušice has a favorable location, we are the gateway to Šumava, so the pool will attract not only our citizens but also visitors and tourists from Šumava," he stated. According to him, the pool can provide entertainment for tourists when the weather is not favorable. Such options are still lacking in Šumava. The nearest indoor pool is in Horažďovice, located 16 kilometers away, or even further in Klatovy, or all the way to Germany in Amberg.
The mayor is therefore convinced that the new pool will bring revitalization to Sušice itself. However, not all residents are enthusiastic about the project being financed by debt. Voices of dissent have emerged from parents of children at Komenského Elementary School, which the city will close due to cost-cutting measures, transferring the children to another school.
The pool will be located next to the ice rink and will be interconnected operationally, in terms of personnel, and technologically. The waste heat generated from cooling the ice surface will partially be used to heat the pool, the mayor explained. The city already has completed projects. The plans include four 25-meter swimming lanes, a children's pool, a paddling pool, and a slide. There will also be whirlpools, a wellness area, a sauna, a fitness center, and a café, which are now standard features of pools.
