Liberec - Soukenné Square in Liberec will receive new paving after two years since its reconstruction, as the original is deteriorating. Although the contractor, Syner, initially resisted acknowledging the complaint, it will ultimately cover the cost of the paving replacement. The city will then ensure protection of the new pavement from damage by vehicles, spokesperson of the municipality Jan Vrabec informed CTK today. Before the square's repair, testing will take place to determine which paving will be the best.

"I am glad that Syner finally proposed an agreement that resolves this long-standing dispute, and that they also agreed to trial samples to ensure the repair is as durable as possible. I believe that the new paving will restore the dignified appearance of Soukenné Square, which citizens have long been calling for," said Mayor Tibor Batthyány (ANO 2011) to CTK. After the repaving, the city will install mechanical barriers in the form of collapsible bollards at its own expense, which will prevent vehicles coming from Pražská and Fügnerova streets from entering the repaired paving and damaging it.
The proposal to settle the dispute was approved today by the city councilors, who also agreed to laying trial samples in the square. The tested materials will be split mosaic and the existing large-format paving combined with cobblestones. "Samples measuring four square meters will appear in two areas of Soukenné Square and will undergo full load testing, including loading by a winter maintenance vehicle. The test results will clearly tell us which of the two variants of new paving will be more effective," explained Deputy Mayor Tomáš Kysela (ANO).
Soukenné Square is located in the lower part of the city near the Forum shopping center, which contributed three million crowns to its reconstruction. The renovation of the square cost nearly 18 million crowns and was completed in December 2012. The area is largely paved, supplemented with greenery and dozens of benches. However, the project has faced criticism from the beginning. The original plan also included space for a market, but that is located by the shopping center. For financial reasons, the square does not feature a water element, which was included in the original design.
