Určice (Prostějovsko) - The panorama of the village of Určice in the Prostějov region is adorned with the restored tower of St. John the Baptist, whose reconstruction cost nearly two million crowns. The tower clock, including the clock mechanism, was also restored, said Vlastimil Staněk from the Olomouc branch of the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) to ČTK today.
The reconstruction of the tower in Určice, which is a movable cultural monument, has been completed in recent days. The tower stands independently by the Church of St. John the Baptist and was in poor technical condition. "The focus of the construction work was primarily on moisture remediation and facade reconstruction, during which the cornices, existing damaged plaster were repaired, and the entire tower was given a new lime wash that corresponds with the facades of the church. Simultaneously, replacements and repairs of window and door fillings were carried out," Staněk stated.
An important part of the tower reconstruction was the restoration of the tower clock, which was cleaned and treated with a special anti-corrosive paint. "The timeworn numerals and minutes were restored with gold paint, as well as the clock hands. The clock mechanism also underwent restoration care," Staněk noted.
The repair of the tower cost 1.96 million crowns, with the Olomouc Region providing half a million and 431,600 crowns contributed by Určice. The Ministry of Culture allocated a grant of 200,000 crowns for the project, and the remaining costs were covered by the Roman Catholic Parish of Určice. "We can label this construction project as a successful example of the cooperation between the investor and the village of Určice and heritage care authorities," Staněk added.
The Church of St. John the Baptist in Určice, which is Baroque sacred architecture, was built between 1727 and 1734. "It is an oriented single-nave hall structure with a semicircularly ended presbytery and a small sacristy extension adjacent to its southern wall. On the southern side of the church stands a separate bell tower, whose core was likely built in the 15th century and reconstructed in the mid-18th century," Staněk concluded.
