The councilors of Brno confirmed that Unistav will repair Tugendhat

Brno - The restoration of the only monument in Brno listed in the UNESCO list - the Tugendhat Villa - is set to begin around February. Today, the council confirmed that the selection process was won by the company Unistav with an amount of 146 million crowns. This was stated by the mayor's deputy Ladislav Macek (ČSSD) to ČTK. The city council chose the company after years of disputes over who would design the restoration of the villa and how the process would proceed. The repair was supposed to start shortly after the monument was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2001. Due to delays, the condition of the sewage system and the roof have reached a critical state.
Macek believes that nothing will block the necessary restoration of the monument now. By the end of January, the mayor should sign a contract with the selected company. The builders would then be able to take over the villa in February. They are expected to work there for about two years.
The municipality managed to move the blocked repair plan at the last minute. Heritage protectors had already set deadlines for Brno, as the owner of the building, regarding when its various parts must be repaired. The first deadlines expire this year. If the contract for the comprehensive restoration were not to be secured, the council would have to order repairs for individual critical states in an accelerated manner. According to Macek, this would have increased the costs and complicated the construction.
The selection of the company was welcomed by Tomáš Drobný, head of the heritage department at the regional office. He believes that now that the municipality has chosen a contractor, the restoration itself will begin. It was the regional office that set the repair deadlines for Brno. However, Drobný admitted today that enforcing these deadlines is difficult, as no fines can be imposed for non-compliance. The region could secure the repairs itself and then bill the owner. "If they have a company and they implement it, this procedure will not occur," Drobný said.
The Brno city council will now wait to see if any of the unsuccessful companies will appeal. Five companies applied for the selection process, of which two were eliminated by the selection committee for failing to meet the requirements. According to Macek, the companies will receive notification of the selection outcome within three days. "There follows a fifteen-day period for appeals," he stated. It is hard to predict whether any of the companies will take advantage of this opportunity, according to him. The Office for the Protection of Economic Competition has not received any complaints yet, spokesperson Kristián Chalupa said today to ČTK.
The Tugendhat Villa was designed for the plot in Brno-Černé Poles by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the late 1920s. The villa set new standards for modern living. The building also had original interior furnishings, including bathroom solutions and heating. The original owners lived in the villa for eight years until they fled from the Nazi regime. During and after the war, the villa served various purposes, and in the 1980s it was not very sensitively renovated. In the 1990s, Czech and Slovak politicians negotiated there about the division of the federation.
