The stream under Veveř castle will be spanned by a replica of the former bridge

Brno - The Svratka River was once crossed by a wooden footbridge under the Veveří Castle near Brno. Starting at the end of May, people will be able to cross under the castle on its replica. This partially roofed wooden bridge will now cross the Veverka stream, which flows into the Svratka, now the Brno Reservoir, under the castle. The mayor of the Brno-Bystrc district, Svatopluk Beneš (ODS), told reporters today that the footbridge will be appreciated mainly by families with small children and those with limited mobility.
    People who wanted to get from Veveří Castle to the recently built bridge across the Brno Reservoir, from where there is a nice view of the countryside, had to walk along a busy road until now. Starting at the end of May, they will be able to walk the entire route along a path leading through the former castle park. According to the castle keeper, Petr Fedora, the new wooden footbridge was made according to an engraving from the early 19th century, which is now in the collections of the Moravian Gallery in Brno.
    The new footbridge and related investments cost approximately ten million crowns. The price also includes the path to the castle and the adjustment of the surrounding areas. In the 19th century, there was a castle meadow with park adjustments under the castle; today, the area is overgrown with self-seeding trees. According to the castle keeper, the castle's administrators intend to gradually restore the meadow so that it forms a whole with the castle. After gradually clearing the trees, it is said that in a few years, Veveří will emerge from the grip of the forests. Visitors will thus have a more picturesque view of the monument, which experts call the "Moravian Karlštejn."
    The first written mention of Veveří dates back to 1213, and since 1925 it has been state-owned. The State Heritage Institute has managed the castle since 1999. Gradual renovations have significantly restored the roofs, the so-called blade tower, and the castle clock. Last week, repairs on the main palace dining room were completed, which now has fully restored frescoes, flooring, chandeliers, and door handles. This year, about ten million crowns from the state budget is to be spent on the restoration of the castle.
    Veveří Castle is visited by approximately 60,000 people annually. Last year, around 47,300 interested parties toured the castle complex, and about another 10,000 visitors participated in events held at the castle.
