Polička (Svitavsko) - Polička in the Svitavy region will start building municipal apartments after many years. In the Bezručova area on the southern edge of the town, it plans to construct two semi-detached houses with 48 apartments. This aims to prevent the outflow of young people and create conditions for increasing the population, said Mayor Jaroslav Martinů to ČTK. "We want people to stay in the town. Our birth rate has dropped by 20 percent over the past five years, and many young graduates leave and remain in Prague. We have lost about 600 residents in less than ten years," Martinů stated. The project includes 12 one-room apartments, 30 two-room apartments, and six three-room apartments. The buildings will be energy-efficient, heated by heat pumps. The city will likely sell part of the apartments, while some should be rental. The municipality would probably take out a mortgage loan for the construction, which people could then repay under favorable conditions. "We do not want to profit from this. Our main aim is to offer people a reasonable housing option," said the mayor. According to him, there is significant demand for apartments in Polička. The town is already registering about 100 interested parties. The town hall and architects will present the entire project to the public on April 13. Construction is expected to start in the autumn.
