Plzeň - Plzeň is preparing a new design for Míru Square in the Bory district. In the discussion about the future shape of the space, which aims to provide a pleasant place for meeting, relaxation, and cultural events, the city will involve experts and residents. People will be able to express their views electronically or at a public meeting, said the mayor Roman Zarzycký (ANO) to ČTK.
The square was established at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and landscaped. A porcelain plaque with the name of the tree species was placed at each tree. Initially, it was named Royal, and from 1921 it was named after Edvard Beneš. During World War II, it was renamed after the writer Friedrich Schiller, and after the war, it returned to Beneš's name. Since 1951, it has been Míru Square.
"Our intention is for it to become a more welcoming space for the people of Plzeň. We believe that the combination of professional insight and local experience will provide quality input for the subsequent architectural competition and help revitalize this space,” stated the mayor. According to his deputy Pavel Bosák (Pirates), the square has much greater potential than is currently being utilized. "Currently, it is more of a transit space, a place that people just pass through. It is the largest square in Bory with a park-like character, which deserves to be a vibrant and attractive center of everyday life," noted Bosák.
Regarding how to better utilize the square, city representatives have already discussed with experts and institutions from the surrounding area whose users and clients actively use the space. They talked about how to adjust pedestrian routes and signage to make the area safer and more accessible, especially for children and seniors, how to support informal meetings of parents with children at the playground, or even outdoor education for surrounding schools. An important proposal was also the addition of benches, drinking fountains, and misting areas, and there was agreement on preserving the park atmosphere of the square while expanding and enhancing its appeal. "Revitalization is a great opportunity to create a space that will serve many people well. We want the square to become an attractive destination. We look forward to a quality input for the architectural competition," said Jaroslav Holler from the city organization Urban Planning and Development of Plzeň.
The public can join the discussion about the future shape of Míru Square from June 2 via a QR code or on the website. A public meeting will take place in the square on June 25 from 12:00 to 18:00. Information tents, an interactive wish map, and bulletin boards for recording specific proposals and suggestions will be prepared.
