Poděbrady - Poděbrady could begin the long-planned reconstruction of the former boiler room on Haken Street into a community cultural center this summer. The multifunctional center, originally intended to have a hall with a capacity of 120 people, was supposed to be completed last year. However, the preparation was complicated by several factors, such as obtaining a building permit or feedback from heritage conservationists. The city council approved the announcement of a tender for the reconstruction, costing approximately 20 million crowns, on Wednesday, and the work will last for 12 months. This was reported by Deputy Mayor Ladislav Langr (Choice for Poděbrady).

"If everything goes well and no one appeals, construction could start in mid-July, but we are limited by the neighboring residential building, so work will only be conducted during working hours; work cannot be done on weekends," Langr said.

Delays accompanied the preparations; according to Langr, there were several factors, such as the digitalization of the building process, objections from heritage conservationists since the building is in a heritage zone, and issues with the relocation of high voltage lines. After the reconstruction, only the pillars will remain from the original boiler room, which previously served to heat the adjacent residential building; the structure will receive a new roof, walls, and heating. The renovations will also include special soundproofing measures. After reconstruction, the industrial style of the building should be preserved. According to Langr, it will be the largest multifunctional space owned by the city for cultural and social events, but it will also be used for gatherings by various associations or students from the elementary art school.

After reconstruction, the retirement club and other organizations are set to move from the first floor of the Pentagon building to the center. The city intends to convert the vacated spaces for a neurologist's office and an infusion center.
