Brno - The Brno district of Židenice is seeking to modify the transport hub Stará osada, which should be barrier-free and safely connected to the train station. According to Mayor Petr Kunc (Voice for Židenice), the terminal is among the busiest in Brno and deserves this, especially considering the extensive repairs at Mendlovo náměstí, he told ČTK today. The investment plan for 70 million crowns was approved by city councilors at their meeting. The timeline for implementation is unknown. It will depend on the budget, said councilor Petr Kratochvíl (ODS) to ČTK today.
The terminal needs to be equipped with sufficient safety features for people with disadvantages. "It will have a guiding line, and there will also be modifications to high curbs," stated Kratochvíl. The plan includes relocating the bus stop shelter or adjusting the crossing area in the loop. "Due to the high traffic of the transport hub and the use of articulated buses, the entry and exit lane in Bubeníčkova will be extended to enhance safety," added the councilor. Cyclists would travel along a shared path with pedestrians after the modifications in the loop area and then access the zone 30 using a pictogram.
A safer route to the train station will be ensured by changing the traffic flow on Stará osada street to one way. "Currently, people have to walk along a two-way road without a sidewalk; the passage is neither safe nor comfortable," Kunc stated. He aims to advocate for the project for traffic and barrier-free changes to begin this year. In addition, the city district plans to collaborate with the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno on an architectural competition for a more comprehensive transformation of the entire area this autumn. This may include the reconstruction of the building housing the Albert store or modifications in Gajdošova street that would lead to its calming.
