Olomouc - The Ministry of Culture has revoked the declaration of the so-called Trávník community house on 17 November Avenue in Přerov as a cultural monument. This decision was made despite the disagreement of Olomouc heritage protectors, who believe the building deserves the status of a cultural monument. According to Martina Mertová from the Olomouc National Heritage Institute, the demolition of the building, where a private company intends to build a shopping center, will represent an irreplaceable cultural loss for Přerov. The Ministry of Culture justified its decision by stating that the building is in a state of emergency and that its restoration would require replacing most of the original structures. "From an architectural perspective, it is an average building, and its value can be sought rather in its overall layout and urban location," the ministry's decision states. Heritage protectors in Olomouc believe that the emergency state of the building should be addressed through renovation, not demolition. Their position was supported by independent experts and members of the scientific council of the National Heritage Institute. According to Mertová, the building had been listed as a monument in the past due to its connection with the history of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and the labor movement in the first half of the last century. Primarily, however, it is a significant early work of architect Robert Motka. "The fact that the building has been reconstructed several times according to Robert Motka's designs does not diminish its value, as opponents have stated. On the contrary, it demonstrates the architect's ability to adapt to current architectural trends," Mertová added. The decision of the ministry was welcomed by the leadership of the city of Přerov. "The company already owns the property and has expressed interest in purchasing additional land for parking. The city council will now discuss this; we were waiting for the opinion of the Ministry of Culture," said Prerov City Hall spokesman Bohuslav Přidal today. Recently, the city council and Mayor Jindřich Valouch also expressed agreement with the revocation of the building's heritage protection.
