Schedule/ Introduction/ June 20 - 22 Student sketches/ June 25 - 26 Workshop/ July 17 - 31 Vernissage/ August 1 Theme of the workshop/ The main theme of the workshop is the restoration of the spiritual space of the island in Davle, which served as a "base" for the Benedictines who came here from the Bavarian Niederalteich and began building an early Christian monastery complex. This complex is one of the oldest in our territory. The workshop is organized with the intent to utilize the entire island space and cultivate the area by small architectural proposals, the results of which will be specific realizations on the river. The traces of the monastery foundations and the entire island's areas in relation to the water level can be utilized. The common framework for all interventions should refer to the monastic complex: they should refer to and develop the current form of the spiritual site in the broadest sense of the word. Progress of the workshop/ The entire event will take place in two meetings directly on the island. The first will be theoretical preparation and familiarization with the place, surroundings, and local atmosphere. This meeting will occur on the island in the second half of June. Representatives from local historians and witnesses, archaeologists, and representatives of the Order of Saint Benedict have been invited to the meeting. The result of the first meeting will be a joint discussion and determination of the main idea for the solution of the island, distribution of areas, and the scope of interventions in individual locations. After the introductory event, participants for the workshop will be chosen based on the submitted sketches that students will send to the contact email on time. The sketches should sufficiently document their vision for the solution of the island and individual objects. From these sketches, those that will be further used for realization will be selected.
Between the phases of introduction and realization, a time gap is left to allow students to think about their designs and ensure the result is of sufficient quality.
The second meeting is the actual realization of the objects, the island workshop. The area in front of the former monastery of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist will be prepared, where space for the workshop, camping spaces, basic hygiene facilities, and a fire pit will be ensured. Candidates will need to prepare for harsh conditions on the island: there will be limited access to drinking water, no showers or Wi-Fi (there will probably be no electricity either), and everything will need to be arranged independently. We will ensure transport from Davle to the island and back to the mainland, building materials, and tools. All other equipment is left to the candidates' discretion, but we expect them to bring quality footwear, sufficient clothing, swimsuits, head coverings, tents, sleeping bags, repellent, and drawing supplies! The workshop will conclude with a vernissage, where we expect a greater interest from local residents and, given the ongoing summer season, many tourists from Sázava. What is the goal of the workshop/ The workshop aims to create small architectural realizations (objects) and artworks (sculptures, installations, etc.) that will develop the multifaceted legacy of the monastic order that operated here. Contemporary architecture and art should be utilized to visualize the lost world of the Western European civilizational and cultural sphere. This cultural and historical contribution of the Order of Saint Benedict will be comprehensively mapped by the upcoming large exhibition at Prague Castle - Open the Heavenly Garden. This temporary outdoor experimental exhibition will accompany this exhibition in Prague simultaneously. The results of the workshop should primarily serve the visitors of the island, who can experience its atmosphere, contemplate, and learn something about the architecture of the now-defunct monastery of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist in situ. For such a visit to the island, easy and independent boat access to the island, installation of a map of the island with marked sites, informational boards, and a small installation (e.g., a poster) directly in Davle referring to the event on the island must be ensured.
Who is the workshop intended for/ The workshop is primarily intended for architecture students, but due to the wide range of topics, anyone from related fields - sculptors, conceptual artists, etc. - is welcome. All those who can devise and especially realize their project in a short time are also welcome. The practical workshop will be preceded by theoretical preparation.
