Olomouc - In the area of the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on Mount Komáří, near Olomouc, which was declared a national cultural monument this year, a long-planned restoration has begun. It will last until the end of next year, with costs amounting to 114 million crowns, reported ČTK Libor Šturc from the Royal Canonry of the Premonstratensians in Strahov. The project includes construction and restoration work. The area will remain open to the public during the works, and services will also continue in the basilica.
"As part of the restoration, the repair of internal plaster and facades of a large part of the area is planned, the reconstruction of windows and doors, and the reconstruction of electrical installations, heating, lighting, and sound systems in the building. An important component will be the installation of new security and fire protection systems," said Šturc. The project also includes restoration work on sculptural and painting artworks, floors, and stained glass. Altars, the pulpit, and historic furnishings from the representative parts of the residence will also be reconstructed, Šturc added.
As part of the project, for which European grants were successfully obtained, the main courtyard with arcades and gardens will also be restored, and the so-called Holy Stairs, which represent a significant pilgrimage site and the museum of the Holy Mount, will be reconstructed.
According to the Premonstratensians, the project will enable the opening of new visitor routes and year-round visitor operation of the monument. "New parts of the area that are currently closed, inaccessible, or unused will be opened to the public. The removal of various access barriers is also planned," said Šturc.
