Kralovice - Mariánská Týnice in the north of Plzeň is embarking on a unique project. According to a 300-year-old vision of Jan Blažej Santini, a chapel will be built at the eastern part of the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, which started in the 18th century. Santini's project will thus be fully realized, even though the original plan no longer exists. The chapel is to be completed this year, with funds provided by the Plzeň Region. Irena Bukačová, director of the Museum and Gallery of Northern Plzeň, spoke to ČTK about the project. The monument is owned by the Plzeň Region, and the completion will cost just under four million crowns.
"Mariánská Týnice is a Baroque abbey that was started in 1711 according to Santini's project by Abbot Evžen Tyttl. This July marked 300 years since the laying of the foundation stone. It is remarkable that financial resources were obtained precisely during this magical anniversary,” she stated. According to her, it is an extraordinary matter from the perspective of heritage preservation, and Santini's building is getting a chance to be realized as an original work, having the opportunity to take its ideal form.
Mariánská Týnice was to serve as a pilgrimage site since the 18th century in connection with the monastery in Plasy. The plan included four parts: the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the abbey, and two ambulatories. However, the eastern ambulatory was never completed, as the monastery lacked sufficient funds and manpower. Only two chapels adjacent to the church were started in the northern and southern parts of the eastern side of the church. However, they were not completed.
"The northern chapel is part of the church's masonry, and from it, another wing of the eastern ambulatory should extend. However, as it was not finished, an exposed spiral staircase leading to the church's choir remains, along with the formations in the masonry," Bukačová stated. In the 20th century, there were attempts to complete the chapel, but for various reasons, this did not happen. It thus remains a fragment, and its footprint is defined. "Now is an excellent anniversary to complete it," Bukačová added.
Even though the actual, authentic, original project by Santini has not survived, the chapel will be built as a copy of the structure located on the western side of the church, which stands according to Santini's project. It will be mirrored. It is to be vaulted with what is known as a "Czech flat arch," or a wide and flat vault typical of the Baroque style, and it will also have a mansard roof. According to Bukačová, nothing is standing in the way of the completion, as no newer buildings have emerged on the site.
