Karlovy Vary - Karlovy Vary region wants to build a university campus for the higher education institutions operating in the area. As there are eight universities and their branches in the region, and two more will be added in September, there is a shortage of lecture halls. Since the development of education is among the region's priorities, they want to take care of the campus. The estimated cost of the construction is in the tens of millions of crowns, said Jan Zborník, the deputy governor, to ČTK today.

By the end of this year, the regional development department of the regional office will prepare a basic study that will answer where the university facilities can be located. The study will also indicate the ideal size of the campus and help to specify the necessary amount for construction. According to Zborník, it is almost certain that it will not be possible to obtain funds for this project from the European Union. "We must rely on the regional budget, possibly a state grant or co-financing with involvement from the private sector," noted the deputy.
What is certain so far is mainly that the university campus is lacking and schools need it. It was the schools that prompted the region to address the issue, Zborník stated. The funds that the region would invest in the project would be gradually repaid by the schools in the form of rent. As he further explained, schools are currently using any suitable space, but even that is not enough. "Therefore, we have agreed with several universities that from September they can also hold lectures in the council chamber of the regional office and in the regional library," added Zborník.
