Brno – Four companies are interested in building the Janáček Cultural Center in Brno. The deadline for submitting applications to participate in the two-round procurement process ended today. It was originally supposed to expire on August 15, but the city extended it due to modifications in the procurement documentation. The competitive price for the construction of the concert hall for the Brno Philharmonic is 2.4 billion crowns, and the work will take at least three years.
"Now the evaluation of the applications will take place, and in case of ambiguities, we will ask participants for additional information or clarification. Price offers have not yet been submitted, as we will only invite qualified participants to submit them. The procurement process is being conducted as a so-called narrower or two-round process, with its first, qualification phase currently underway," said Filip Poňuchálek, a spokesperson for the Brno city authority.
The selection process for the company to build the center was announced by the city company Brněnské komunikace in June. City representatives previously faced criticism from opposition councilors and cultural figures for postponing the construction of the concert hall. The Brno Philharmonic currently performs in the Besední dům, where it cannot hold concerts with its maximum possible ensemble.
The hall, which will accommodate approximately 1,200 people, will be located between Veselá and Besední streets. There used to be a parking lot here, which was replaced by underground garages in 2018 as the first stage of construction. However, they are currently unused and dormant, despite the fact that the city previously aimed for the construction of the concert hall to follow the building of the garages.
