How to make the forests around Kladno more attractive? A multidisciplinary workshop in Kladno for students of architecture, forestry, landscape and garden architecture, ecology, environmental studies, and other fields.
The city of Kladno is almost completely surrounded by suburban forests, which are within walking distance for most residents. The ring of suburban forests prevented significant extensive development of the city in the 1990s and thus protected the city from the adverse effects of surrounding land development. While this did lead to some residents moving to nearby municipalities where massive construction of single-family homes on greenfield sites was taking place and continues to happen, from today’s urbanistic perspective, this presents an opportunity for Kladno to maintain compact dimensions, develop qualitatively within, and utilize the proximity of the surrounding landscape as a place for recreation.
Workshop Objective To identify issues and potentials of suburban forests, define their possible further development and specific improvements. Conceptual project proposals at various scales - from global, addressing the relationship and connection between the city and forests, forest management practices, etc., to smaller proposals focused on individual locations, down to the micro level, such as furniture design.
The output of the workshop will be an exhibition and presentation for the public. The entire process and all proposals will be documented and published in book form.
Benefits for Students An opportunity to understand the issues of suburban forests and learn how to design within them. The chance to consult work with interesting lecturers and guests. Collaboration in a multi-disciplinary team, where different perspectives and expertise (landscape architecture, architecture, visual arts, economics, tourism, sociology) will synergistically engage. The opportunity to present one’s work to the public and city leadership and thus receive valuable feedback. Publication of work in the media and in the released proceedings.
