Olomouc - The Cathedral Hill in Olomouc, referred to as Olomouc Acropolis, could transform in the future into a center of cultural activities and social life. The city council has allocated 400,000 crowns for a study that addresses, for instance, the improvement of this space, lighting, and the establishment of an information center. The city plans to collaborate with the Museum of Art in Olomouc, which is the creator of the idea.

"After the establishment of the Archdiocesan Museum, we have noticed an extraordinary demand for this place. We want to use it for further filling of exhibitions. We want to create a center that would connect with other projects," said Jaromír Czmero, the deputy mayor of Olomouc (ČSSD), to reporters today.
The goal of the project is to engage a significant area in the public life of the city, enhance the attractiveness of the area for active leisure for both residents and visitors, and develop the infrastructure for tourism in this historic part of the city. "The project includes, for instance, the presentation of archaeological findings, lighting, furnishings, the issue of parking, and the upgrading of the areas around Václavské náměstí," Czmero added.
The initiator of the project is Pavel Zatloukal, the director of the Museum of Art in Olomouc. In the materials presented to the Olomouc council, he outlined issues such as the improvement of the cathedral's facilities, the release of the cloister, the construction of an information center, and the accessibility of the park around the cathedral.
The significance of the hill was recently enhanced by the opening of the unique Archdiocesan Museum. The local Cathedral of St. Wenceslaus is also undergoing a major reconstruction, managed by the Olomouc Metropolitan Chapter. The city has invested in the reconstruction of the park beneath the dome. "The city now has a unique opportunity to build upon the enormous investments from the state and the church into this historic part of the city and to revitalize the wide area related to Cathedral Hill with financial support from the European Union," stated the council's resolution. According to Czmero, experts estimate the total costs of the project at approximately 100 million crowns; the creators could obtain up to 85 percent from European funds.
The Olomouc Acropolis is the name given to the most significant of the three peaks on the Olomouc hill. In the period of the early Czech state, it played a decisive role in the political, ecclesiastical, and cultural history of Moravia and from a historical perspective, it is one of the most significant sites in the territory of the republic. In the mid-11th century, a stone castle of the Olomouc Přemyslids stood on the hill. After the completion of the Saint Wenceslaus Cathedral, it became the spiritual center of Moravia.
